October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Most of us know someone who has been affected by breast cancer. While a diagnosis can be devastating and overwhelming let's not lose sight of the light that still remains.
This month I would like to introduce and tell Barbara's story.
Barbara was contacted in January by her sister with the news that her sister had been diagnosed with invasive lobular carcinoma. Soon after Barbara herself went to the doctor to find not only did she have breast cancer in one breast but both. Like her sister she was diagnosed with invasive lobular carcinoma but she also was diagnosed with a second form of cancer mucinous carcinoma.
Barbara fell into the rare 3% of woman with two different breast cancers.
Barbara underwent four rounds of chemo and a bilateral mastectomy. She is currently cancer free and healing!
Barbara was somewhat reluctant to have her portraits while she was still healing and before she underwent reconstruction. However, It is important to me that woman, no matter what stage of treatment or life that they are in understand how immensely beautiful they are. I applaud Barbara for her courage to come to the studio and let her light shine.
Barbara is a beautiful soul who loves to laugh, be silly and dance!
Barbara is 61 years old, married with a daughter and two stepsons. She has two grandchildren and four dogs. She is loved and full of love. She has not let cancer keep her down. She is a survivor who lets her light shine for all to see.
A special thank you to my makeup artist Jessica Musselman for donating her time and services. Working together we were able to celebrate Barbara and her inner and outer beauty.
